What is DIPG?

DIPG, diffused intrinsic pontine glioma, is a glioma found within the pontine area of the brain. DIPG can sometimes be diagnosed as DMG- DMG involves a glioma that may also be found in the midline of the brain (thalamus, brainstem and spinal cord). Due to its location DIPG is difficult to treat, inoperable and considered terminal upon diagnosis.

DIPG most commonly affects children between the age of 5-10 years old but can affect those younger or older including adults. It accounts for 10-15% of all childhood brain tumors. The only standard of care involved 30 rounds of radiation which can give time. Stage 1 trials around the country are starting to offer hope and time but the prognosis is always stated as terminal with life expectancy of 9 to 12 months.
